You can always count on the Spirit Awards to give recognition to independent films ignored by the Academy. Like most, I missed the ceremony but hit the IFC party where the real fun was to be had. After sneaking past security into the VIP area, I was assaulted by familiar faces from the indie film world. The difference here was that these faces were stuffed with chi-chi appetizers (crap like pizza with potatoes and goat cheese -- something I'd never eat on purpose) and loads of free booze. For the second year in a row, I actually had a ticket for the awards ceremony itself, which was hosted by John Waters and featured an hysterical Brittany Murphy onstage meltdown, but did not get in through a bizarre comedy of errors. Oh well. I Tivo'd the event and watched it later (I love that the word "Tivo" can now be used as a verb) and concluded that I didn't mi I did miss out on an amazing goodie bag, but whatever.
