HDTV UK: Sony adds DVR capabilities to the PS3

« Toshiba cuts HD-E1 player price in UK | Main | Pace appoints new president to drive growth in Europe and Asia Pacific » Sony adds DVR capabilities to the PS3 In a bold move that could push the PS3 console ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony has announced that it will add digital video recording capabilities to the PS3 via an add-on called PlayTV. The add-on will allow users to watch, pause and rewind live TV via their next generation consoles – something that the Xbox 360 can’t do, although Microsoft is apparently planning to deliver Internet TV in the future. "With the PlayTV's state of the art TV tuner and PVR functionality, the PS3 is now the best choice of home entertainment hub for the whole family," says Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves. PlayTV will initially launch in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain early next year and will come to other countries later in the year. The device will come with two high-definition tuners, but will also support standard-definition. And, using the Remote Play functionality of the Sony PSP portable device, users can also watch and record live TV via Wi-Fi. The news was announced at a video game conference in Liepzig, Germany where Sony also announced that it intends to ship 11 million units worldwide by 2008.
