Charter Activates First All-Digital TV Cable Service in the U. S. Advanced Digital Video Systems Provide High Quality Picture and New Service Options While Reducing Operational Costs and Simplifying Future Expansion By DMN Staff Writer Charter Communications, In announced activation of the first all-digital network in the United States by an established multi-system cable operator. The new service has been successfully delivered without an analog set-top box over an existing HFC (hybrid fiber-coaxial) network simultaneously with basic analog cable programming in Charter's Long Beach, California system. Charter's new service incorporates the two defining elements of an all-digital system: a digital compression system that encodes the entire program line-up and digital program insertion system. The digital compression system, which is central to the service, is powered by Harmonic's DiviCom MV 50 variable bit-rate encoders and third-generation DiviTrackXE closed loop statistical multiplexing system. These CableLabs certified encoders embed the SCTE-35 compliant cue tones necessary to enable true digital program insertion. The compression capabilities of the Harmonic-based digital headend makes it possible to provision multiple standard and/or high definition digital channels-each with a full resolution broadcast-quality picture-using the spectrum required to deliver a single analog channel. RC Forums: Rogers digital cable unscrambled channels (Page 8 of 11)

I have a couple questions about receiving these unscrambled digital channels (it's primarily for Daniel Tonks, but anyone who can answer them is welcome to). At the end of February I cancelled my Rogers cable tv service, but kept my Rogers internet service. When I cancelled, I asked whether I would be able to give away my digital cable box to someone else and was told they would disconnect it from my account after March 1st so that anyone could use it. I was also told I would probably have analog cable for a few weeks before someone came out to disconnect it. Since it was there, I made good use of the analog cable feed until it disappeared last Thursday, but I then noticed my digital cable box was still able to pick up all the unscrambled channels you describe in this thread. Given all this, I have two questions: 1. Am I going to be able to pick up these channels for as long as I have cable internet service through Rogers? 2. Is my cable box going to call home to Rogers to let them know I'm still able to access these channels? (and if so, can I stop this?) Thanks in advance!
