Robert Christgau: Rock Critic's Choice: Top Ten

Robert Christgau: Rock Critic's Choice: Top Ten My criteria were playability, depth of expression, and avoidance of waste. There's not a bad cut on any of these albums, and almost all of them are good to great. The only one I don't still play often is 12 Songs , because it's not a casual kind of record. I decided not to "vote" in this poll, but to rely on the records I've liked best over the years. I know everybody who votes for Chuck Berry is going to vote for Golden Decade , but I've always preferred More , which includes "Come On" and "Let It Rock" and avoids dubious (if pleasant) novelties like "Too Pooped To Pop" and "Anthony Boy." Likewise, The Best of Otis Redding , a remarkably well-constructed anthology, is a more obvious choice than Immortal , but Immortal happens to be a record I've played obsessively for almost a decade. If I'd followed this logic I might have selected Something New , one of six or seven Beatles albums that was in the running, but a final comparison with Rubber Soul (never an emotional favorite) was decisive. (I don't own the British versions of the Beatles LPs, but I love the Rubber Soul outtakes on Yesterday . . . and Today , which was also a contributing factor. Yesterday . . . and Today was in the Wild Honey vs.

Literary theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Literary theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Literary theory and literature One of the fundamental questions of literary theory is "What is literature ?", though many contemporary theorists and literary scholars believe either that "literature" cannot be defined or that it can refer to any use of language . Specific theories are distinguished not only by their methods and conclusions, but even by how they define a " text ." For some scholars of literature, "texts" comprises little more than "books belonging to the Western literary canon ." But the principles and methods of literary theory have been applied to non-fiction, popular fiction , film , historical documents, law, advertising, etc., in the related field of cultural studies . In fact, some scholars within cultural studies treat cultural events, like fashion or football riots, as "texts" to be interpreted. By this measure, literary theory can be thought of as the general theory of interpretation. Since theorists of literature often draw on a very heterogeneous tradition of Continental philosophy and the philosophy of language , any classification of their approaches is only an approximation. There are many "schools" or types of literary theory, which take different approaches to understanding texts. Most theorists, even among those listed below, combine methods from more than one of these approaches (for instance, the deconstructive approach of Paul de Man drew on a long tradition of close reading pioneered by the New Critics , and de Man was trained in the European hermeneutic tradition). Broad schools of theory that have historically been important include the New Criticism , formalism , Russian formalism , and structuralism , post-structuralism , Marxism , feminism and French feminism , Christian , post-colonialism , new historicism , deconstruction , reader-response criticism , and psychoanalytic criticism. History The practice of literary theory became a profession in the 20th century, but it has historical roots that run as far back as ancient Greece ( Aristotle 's Poetics is an often cited early example) and ancient Rome ( Longinus ' On the Sublime and Horace 's Ars Poetica ), and the aesthetic theories of philosophers from ancient philosophy through the 18th and 19th centuries are important influences on current literary study. The theory and criticism of literature are, of course, also closely tied to the history of literature .

The American Culture: An Anti-Christian Movie Criticism

The American Culture: An Anti-Christian Movie Criticism The American Culture Your home for essential cultural news and expert analysis, by S. T. Karnick. « Weird Comedies Take Movie Box Office Lead | Main | Ed Hoch, RIP » An Anti-Christian Movie Criticism I haven't seen The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A Veggie Tales Movie, so of course I have no opinion on whether it is any good, but I found a fascinating assumption in Lou Lumenick's review of the film in the New York Pos Lumenick suggests that a work reflecting Christian values must necessarily be bad. In an outline of what's wrong with the film, Lumenick states the following: The CGI animation is crude, the humor is cruder, and the plot is Christian-friendly. Proceed at your own risk. My advice to all, including non-Christians: when reading reviews in the New York Post , proceed at your own risk. Posted by S. T. Karnick on January 16, 2008 02:15 PM | Permalink TrackBack TrackBack URL for this entry: http://www.stkarnick.com/blog-mt2/mt-tb.fcgi/633 Comments Doesn't a film that includes "crude humor" clash with Christia I'm not really a fan of animation, but there was a time when a great many "Christian-friendly" films were made. Maybe Lumenick means that the film is overly preachy. It's hard to take this review seriously.
