While living in Moctezuma's court and experiencing the joys and heartbreak of her first love, Hummingbird witnesses the wondrous arrival of Cortez and the Spanish Conquistadores, those bearded and armored gods who descended from their galleons on horseback to brutally devastate her land and her people. She mournfully recounts the savage battles which led to the fall of the once-great city of Tenochtitlan , the ancient Aztec capital, along with the suffering she felt upon losing her identity, her language and traditions, and even her ancestral gods.
