Comcast expands system upgrade / 2,200 miles of cable part of plan to add telephone service
Comcast Corp. said Wednesday that it will spend $80 million in the next year and a half to finish upgrading its cable television and high-speed Internet network in the Bay Area. The announcement comes on the heels of rival AT&T Inc.'s plans last week to roll out a television subscription service, called U-verse, in the Bay Area. Comcast said it will lay 2,200 miles of fiber-optic cable in Los Gatos, Milpitas, Saratoga, Santa Rosa, Hayward, San Leandro, Sunnyvale and Half Moon Bay. The improvements will allow the 250,000 homes in those cities to access video-on-demand and Internet telephone services, something that their neighbors in the Bay Area's 120 other cities already receive. "It's one of the things our residents ask for the most," said Eric McHenry, Santa Rosa's chief technology officer. "We think we should have comparable services." Both companies are battling to provide an all-in-one, discounted package of services, marketed as a triple play of telephone, television and Internet service. AT&T began selling television service last week in Danville, San Ramon, Cupertino and Saratoga and plans to expand it to the rest of the Bay Area in the next two years. Comcast is promoting a bundle of the three services for one year for a monthly fee of $99. Comcast said its upgrade has nothing to do with AT&T's plans, noting that the cities had the region's most advanced networks 10 years ago, before Comcast took over. "It's our continued pledge to the Bay Area, to look at ways to enhance and improve our services and products," said Comcast spokeswoman Lorena Hernandez. Comcast began deploying video-on-demand services in the Bay Area in 2004, allowing consumers to watch select television shows and movies at any time. The Philadelphia company introduced its Internet telephone service in the Bay Area in April.
