The 71-year-old actor passed away Jan. 16 in Los Angeles,В his nephew, Michael Ciccolini, announcedВ Sunday. Carey's recurring role on the cop comedy, from 1976 to 1982, had him hassling Hal Linden's captain for a promotion to detective. As Levitt, he was a constant thorn in Capt. Miller's side, always giving his unsolicited opinion on what his colleagues should be doing. The actor appeared in many Mel Brooks movies including History of the World Part I and High Anxiety . "Ron Carey was truly talented, very funny and one of the dearest men I've ever worked with," Brooks said in a statement. Carey appeared in numerous commercials andВ in many sitcoms and movies, including an early performance asВ a cab driver in the 1970 Jack Lemmon comedy The Out of Towners . "Stars are stars. But without us, the show wouldn't go on," CareyВ said in 1989. Born Ronald Joseph Cicenia on Dec. 11, 1935, in Newark, N. J., Carey launched his show business career in the late 1950s as a stand-up comedian.
